It is said that if you come across a mushroom, fairies must be nearby! I’ve never encountered a fairy ring, but I have encountered fungi communities and the fae folk who live amongst the trees and leaves.

To prepare for this spell, I highly recommend prepping everything the night before!  This can include choosing your hiking destination, laying your clothes out, and getting your hiking boots ready.

Parks and Recreation

Before you can go hiking, you need to have a destination in mind!  Nine times out of ten, I always end up at my favorite park here in Florida.  Part of being a green witch is knowing your genius loci, spirits of the land.  

It’s also important to practice safety while hiking!  When you’re walking in the forest, you’re in the habitat of sometimes dangerous, unpredictable animals.  It’s important to be prepared for any situation.  

Be sure to have water, sunscreen, a camera, bug spray, and anything else you might need for the next steps in the spell.  I always keep everything in my pink hiking backpack! 

This includes tools of the trade.  Of course, you’ll need spell ingredients that you keep in a separate compartment of your backpack.  That way you have it ready and easily accessible.  

Next, you’ll need containers to keep any specimens you collect.  Always be respectful, give thanks to the plants and mushrooms, and leave an offering!

Plant spirits like offerings of herbs, tiny gemstones, and honeycombs.  Tree spirits like whole herb sprigs of thyme and rosemary.  Mushroom spirits like tiny crystals, flower petals, and pebbles.

Hekate taught me how to perform my first curse, as well as my first banishing and binding spell. She taught me a great deal about protection and defense magic.

When I was ready, she taught me how to make my first key. My first key was a black mushroom that I plucked from the forest floor and kept in a bottle of isopropyl alcohol for preservation. When the key needed a refresh, I would shake the bottle, watching my mushroom key and its every movement.

The death tarot card represents death, rebirth, and all the places in between. It is within that in-between liminal space where you can find Goddess Hekate, hiding in the shadows with her set of keys.

How will you know when Hekate is ready to give you one of her keys? There will be a knowing and a spirit of quietness as she approaches you with her key.

Goddess Hekate is known as both the goddess of keys and doors. She uses her torch to light the way in all the darkness. She holds the knowledge, wisdom, and power to the great mysteries of life.

She is a patient goddess and she is an ally and a friend. But, make no mistake, Goddess Hekate can be violent, fierce, and commanding, like a voice booming in a place of solitude.

While Goddess Fortuna is my patron deity, Goddess Hekate is how I power through the darkness. She enfolds me in her arms like a mother would, offering shelter and protection.

It is in the darkness where I have found her key and learned to make my own set of keys. Mushrooms hold a sacred power to the Goddess Hekate. They open the doors to things you never knew before.

You’ll want to wear your heart on your sleeve and address any issues you may be struggling with. You can then add anything you’d like assistance with. It can be anything the hedgehog is known for (disguise, shapeshifting, protection, etc.) or it can be anything that weighs heavily on your heart. 

I find that being sincere goes a long way with any magical being! When you feel you have spent yourself, you can burn your letter over the sink or a cauldron. You can add the ashes to a sacred space in your garden where you’d imagine your hedgehog hanging out.

Once a relationship has been established, you can work with your hedgehog spirit animal whenever you like! Be sure to always be respectful and to show gratitude. Hedgehogs are pretty easygoing, but like anyone else, they deserve love and respect. 

Hedgehog magic can be incorporated into any spell, charm, or amulet. You may even find yourself connecting with a hedgehog so much that you decide to adopt one as a pet! Just know that it is unlikely a real-life hedgehog will be your magical familiar. 

Remember that a familiar is a magical creature that assists you in magical workings! They protect, provide guidance, and shield you from any harmful entities that emerge on your mystical path. This isn’t something that a physical animal can do so easily, though there are rare cases. 

You don’t need an actual hedgehog to perform any spell, remedy, or ritual. All you need is the energetic blueprint of a hedgehog animal familiar to begin working spells with them. If you have a hedgehog as a pet, even better! 

But, I wouldn’t run out and buy one to perform magic. It is completely unnecessary. I recommend only adopting animals in situations where you feel called to do so, but that’s just me :) 

The more you work with the hedgehog animal familiar, the easier this will get! Keep working at it and include hedgehog magic in out-of-the-ordinary spells to challenge yourself. This will build your relationship with the spiritual essence of the animal. 

You can also surround yourself with hedgehog imagery, and embroidered pillows, and add a hedgehog statuary to your garden to get a feel for the animal. You could even create a hedgehog altar or sacred space to show love and appreciation to your new ally. 

I recommend a hedgehog altar in the garden! You could put a cute hedgehog statue in your garden, plant its favorite flowers, add some gemstones to the soil, and leave offerings. Your hedgehog guide will greatly appreciate it.
