Fern folklore is special! It is dipped in fairytale magic. Ferns are known worldwide as enchantresses, and shapeshifters, and are commonly associated with the fairy folk. Working with the spiritual meaning of ferns and Mercury Retrograde can be life-changing by design.

The Mercury Retrograde Fern Plant Profile

When I think of the fern plant profile, I think of fairytale magic! Ferns are childlike, magical, and related to fairy witchcraft. When working with ferns, you might find your imagination soaring!

Mercury Retrograde, on the other hand, is a period of darkness, slowing down, and smelling the flowers. Many people look inward and do shadow work during the retrograde. Many activities will be calm, slow, and related to the past.

I chose the fern as a Mercury Retrograde plant because it denotes air magic and the Sun God Hermes! Hermes rules Mercury, which is governed by travel, communication, and advanced technology. But, we’ll get into that more in a moment!

Hermes is one of the fun, interesting, and playful gods! He is known as a bit of a trickster. He sometimes encourages petty thievery and tricks of the trade. He kind of does whatever he wants.

Additionally, Hermes is an ouranic deity, meaning he is an air god versus a god of the underworld, though he plays a part in assisting the dead reach their final destination. He is a god meant to be up high in the clouds.

As a plant spirit, fern denotes air magic! It is also a bit of a trickster, just like the Greek God Hermes. This means these two complement each other perfectly.

The fern plant is airy and lighthearted at best! This is a plant known for its magical properties, even though it can be used for plant medicine, too.

The fern and Mercury Retrograde go hand-in-hand together! There’s a relationship of give and take here. The fern denotes the past and looking deeply into it, while Mercury Retrograde denotes nostalgia, a blast from the past we can look fondly back on.

Fern Folklore

Ferns are known as the shapeshifters of the plant world! This makes them perfect for glamour magic, which is a type of magic that changes how the world sees you, and more importantly, how you see yourself.

In folklore, it is said that ferns are invisible and can’t be seen. Again, this makes them shapeshifters, slipping between worlds seamlessly. Ferns can slip in between the earthly realm and the fairy realm.

It is said that one can see a fern on midsummer eve, but in the forest, I see them all the time. I consider ferns to be portals to the fairy realm, where you can see such beings as the moss queen, the green man, and the land spirits.

In medieval times, people would hang dried ferns around the home for protection. This would prove to be especially helpful when using weather witchcraft during a storm. They are said to ward off lightning, negativity, and evil forces.

If you have a particularly nasty ghost hanging around your home or grounds, the fern can make a great plant protection ward! Additionally, the fern plant ward can send toxic people and situations away, scattering them in new directions, and pushing them as far away from you as possible.

Ferns are considered to be a symbol of good luck! If you ever see a fern flower bloom, you can be rest assured, you’ll have happiness, good luck, and great fortune for the rest of the year.

In fern folklore, ferns can act as a veil, a portal, and a pathway into the Other Side. They have a direct link to the lower realm, where fairies, gnomes, and animal familiars can be found.

Therefore, if you ever want to hide from the world, hide behind the magic of the fern! If you ever want to discover new worlds, fern is your go-to magical herb. Fern can take you to new places!

The fern plant is a time travel herb! Ferns are associated with childhood and days gone by. They are creatively linked to our past.

If you ever need to go backward in time, Fern is the perfect tool for time traveling! You can use ferns and rosemary to retrieve old memories during a Mercury in Retrograde period. This allows you to do some inner child healing!

Most of all, the fern plant is associated with fairy witchcraft! Fairy magic is being able to see nature spirits and elementals and connect with them through everyday mundane magic.

Hermes, Fern Magic, and Mercury Retrograde

Out of all the gods, Hermes is the Sun God most associated with Mercury in Retrograde energy! Hermes governs the planet Mercury, as well as all things retrograde.

Even though Hermes is all about advanced technology, he is also a god of the past. He knows what haunts you and what keeps you up at night. He knows the skeletons in your closet and how to shake them loose.

Hermes is also a god that works with the dead. Even though, technically, he’s not a god of the underworld, he can put the spirits of the past to rest. If you are struggling with some demons, Hermes is the god you want to put your trust in.

It’s not uncommon for things from the past to pop up during a retrograde period! It could be a childhood wound or trauma, old injuries that never fully healed, or an old lover coming back to rekindle things. Nothing is off the table when Mercury goes retrograde so be prepared for anything!

How can Hermes help you during Mercury Retrograde? He can help you sort through the past and lay it to rest. He can assist you with shuffling through old memories and making sense of them. He brings a calm, soothing energy to everything he touches!

I recommend using a feather or a fern fan to connect with the Greek God Hermes! He’s relatable, approachable, and fast-acting. You can call on him when old issues come back around from the past or when you’d like to revitalize an old project and bring it back to life!

Fern Astrological Correspondences

  • Air Element

  • Both genders (Masculine/Feminine)

  • Planet Mercury

  • The Sun

  • Gemini Sun Sign (She’s lighthearted, carefree, and on the go!)

  • Sagittarius Moon Sign

  • Throat Chakra (Blue)

  • The Lovers Tarot Card

  • Pixie Familiar (Air Sylph)

  • Lapis lazuli crystals (playful, fun, and can be used for fairy magic!)

When I think of ferns, I think of the air element! First and foremost, ferns are light and airy. They can be used for communication between worlds and time travel.

Ferns are both masculine and feminine, not gaining their sexual orientation until full growth. They are also ruled by the Planet Mercury and retrograde periods, an occurrence that happens 3 or 4 times a year. Mercury is a planet known for communication, safe travels, and advanced highlights in technology.

The fern plant monograph is highly rooted in the throat chakra! The throat chakra swirls with blue, sparkling light and conjures up our ability for self-expression, fun, and creativity.

As a sun sign, the fern plant is ruled by Gemini, due to its vexing nature. This type of energy tends to be scattered, like seeds on the wind. The fern can help with the process of memories and help guide you in a new direction.

As a moon sign, the fern plant is ruled by Sagittarius, due to its fun-loving nature. This brings out the childlike, fun, and youthful energy of the fern plant spirit!

For this juxtaposition, the Lovers Tarot Card is the card I most associate with the fern plant ally! The Lovers Tarot Card denotes choices, a blend of masculine and feminine energies, and finding our true love. It’s an important card for such a magical, potent plant!

Pixie Familiar and the Fern Plant

Finally, last but not least, the fern is associated with a group of fairies known as the pixies! They are tiny, air sylphs with wings. You can sometimes see them on trees and plants in still frame motion when you photograph a tree hollow. When people think of the pixie fairy, they often think of Tinkerbell!

The pixie fairy can assist with passing on messages of communication. Sometimes, the message can be sent to another human being or it can be sent to someone higher up in the fairy kingdom.

Fern Magic: Using Ferns in Witchcraft

What is fern magic? Fern witchcraft is when a witch utilizes ferns for magical and mystical means. You can use the fern plant to discover new worlds, including those that seem out of the realm of possibility.

For example, ferns work great for any kind of hedge riding experience! Hedge riding is when you explore the upper realm, the middle earth, and the lower realm where fairies, familiars, and other spirits closer to earth reside. Many hedge witches use this method to perform spells on the Other Side and communicate with the magic of ancestors. If this is something you are interested in, the fern might make a good choice!

Ferns can also be used as a fern plant ward. What is a plant ward? A ward is something that can be put up physically to act as a portal of protection. Using a plant ward means protecting your home and grounds from trespassers of all kinds, including the kind from the spirit world.

Additionally, ferns can be used in any kind of communication spell! I would consider them to be quite effective, especially when combined with items like feathers, lemon pepper, and ginger root. During Mercury Retrograde, you can use the planet of communication to remedy a no-contact situation.

Ferns can also be used in glamour magic spells! For glamour magic, the goal is to change how people see you and how you see yourself. How do you want the world to perceive you? Hold a fern in one hand and reflect on it. Do this once a day to bring it to fruition. Do you want to be seen as charming and gracious? Do you want to be seen as beautiful and stylish? Fern can make it happen!

I also find ferns to be quite useful when it comes to any kind of new beginning spell! For example, during a retrograde, one might like to shake the dust off of an old project and make it brand-new again. Ferns create new beginnings and opportunities for growth!

Ferns can also be used in money spells! Add a fern to any money spell to watch your money magic grow. Keep a dried fern in your wallet for good luck and great fortune!

When it comes to weather witchcraft, ferns can ward off storms and lightning! They are powerful wards of protection and can be used as weather divination rods to predict the future of the weather.

As you can see, fern magic can be included in many different kinds of magic! Ferns symbolize the heart of adventure, the spirit of Mother Nature, and new beginnings. They bring a feeling of hope, rebirth, and renewal to everything they touch. Choose a fern plant spirit today!

Ferns and Fairy Witchcraft

Ferns and fairy witchcraft go hand-in-hand together! Many of the magical properties and folklore associated with ferns revolve around fairies.

For example, if you wish to reach the lower realm, where the nature spirits reside, you might like to use a fern leaf to make this happen. Ferns can be used for hedge riding and visiting new and exciting places! Ferns can also connect you with your animal familiar upon your visit.

If you wish to see a fairy, ferns are the way to go! Ferns, much like their leafy counterparts, act as portals to the fairy realm. This makes seeing and communicating with the nature spirits possible.

Ferns and Animal Witchcraft

Did you know that ferns can open up the portal of communication between animals and humans? This is called telepathy. You can learn to understand and comprehend animal speak.

What is animal speak? Animal speak is the ability to hear and understand animals telepathically. You can speak to them this way. Fern plant spirit makes that possible!

Additionally, you can use the fern plant to discover and meet your animal familiar! What is an animal familiar? An animal familiar acts as a guide and a facilitator of magic in your workings.

Being able to communicate with animals not only helps you become a better pet owner, but it assists you in becoming a wonderful custodian of the forests, lakes, deserts, and rainforests of the earth. The more you understand animal magic, the more you’ll want to take measures to protect them.

Fern Mercury Retrograde Invisibility Cloak Ritual

During Mercury Retrograde, you might want to be alone and go into yourself. Unfortunately, people and situations from the past seem to come back around during this period. One thing you can do is put on an invisibility cloak so no one can see you!

This is similar to veiling, in that no one will notice you or think about you unless you take it off. You can put it on each morning before you start your day with a DIY Botanical Energy Shield!

You are going to imagine or use a real living or preserved fern for your cloak of invisibility. Picture yourself in the magic of the ferns. They are all around you, hiding you. If you have ever walked on a fern trail, you’ll have experienced how ferns hide things and camouflage them supremely well. This is what the magic of ferns will do for you!

Keep seeing them, as you go deeper into the fern leaves until you are almost unrecognizable. Keep doing this until you are completely immersed in the experience. You should eventually become one with the fern leaves.

This holds it in place for the entire day. At the end of the day, take a shower or bath and imagine yourself washing the leaves off that camouflage your body and face. This will make you fully visible again.

You can use this shield whenever you like! I recommend doing it during a retrograde period, especially if you need some time alone for yourself, even if it’s just for the day.
