Plants By Laurali The Garden Witchcraft Field Guide

The Garden Witchcraft Field Guide covers garden witchcraft spells for home protection and blessings, and gnome magic in the garden with The Green Hearth Witch! Creating a magical witch’s garden is a great place to learn about the magical properties of herbs and plants.

When I think of garden magick, I think of garden familiars, fairies, and gnome magick! I also consider it a great place to start for the beginner witch. Once you begin working in the garden, you become more attuned to the circadian rhythms of nature.

The garden is where you can begin to form a relationship with plant spirits. Plants are sentient creatures that often bond with the humans who tend to them with care. It’s not uncommon to bond with the plants in your garden.

It’s also in the garden where you’ll discover animal familiars who will come to your aid. The garden is filled with butterflies, snails, bunnies, frogs, and birds. You can work with the spirit of the animal in your garden to fulfill a purpose in your life.

I’ve buried both crows and a baby bunny that were found dead in my yard, near the garden. Crow animal spirit often comes by to inform me that a big change is about to happen, while the bunny spirit reminds me that luck is always on my side.

The magical witch’s garden is a living, breathing place of healing magic! It’s the place one goes to get away from it all. The plants, herbs, and flowers in the garden represent that life force energy.

It is here that the plant witch collects healing herbs from the garden to use in natural remedies. It’s in the garden where the witch grows farm-to-table foods for health and well-being. Witchy gardening tips for beginners always begin and end in the garden landscape.

The witch’s garden has a spirit and essence of its own. Much like the house of the house witch, it is ensouled by a plethora of plants, wildlife, and garden spells, each with its own spirit.

Everything in the garden is brought to life! From the rich, organic soil to the rainwater that seeps into its roots, the garden is a community of living things. It is home to magic.

Working with garden spirits can enrich your life in many ways. It is well known that gardening is good for the mind, body, and soul, making it the perfect conduit for the green witch.

In this article, you’ll learn how to be a garden witch! Learn how to discover secret gardens, work with gnome and fairy spirits, and bond with animal familiars straight from the garden.

The Garden Witchcraft Field Guide

The Garden Witchcraft Field Guide goes deeper into the secret, hidden places of the witch’s garden. The soil in the garden is a powerful place to charge the garden spells you place there, whether it be a spell jar, charm bag, or a potted plant spell.

The moon greatly influences the garden. You can garden by the light of the moon or use the moon’s gravity to grow your garden. Moon gardening is a favorite for many witches because nighttime is a period of growth, healing, and reflection.

The dark moon is the perfect time to cultivate a garden from scratch. I would consider it the planning phase of garden magic. Map out where you are going to plant your spells, so you can dig them up and find them at a later date.

I find the new moon perfect for planting the seeds of new intentions. This moon phase is all about starting over and wiping the slate clean. To start from scratch, plant seeds and watch them grow through all of the moon phases.

The waxing moon is perfect for tending the garden and creating new growth. This is the ideal time for pruning, weeding, and focusing on ways to increase something in your life. Think about what needs to grow in your life and make it your intention.

The full moon is perfect for harvesting what you’ve grown. It’s a powerful time for manifesting because it is the culmination of everything. Use this time to collect herbs, forage mushrooms, and work with any garden familiars that can help you reach your current goal.

The waning moon, also known as the baneful moon phase, is perfect for spending time in the garden and enjoying it. It’s a period of reflection and quiet contemplation. Take your garden journal and write about the magical things you see and experience in your garden. This is also the ideal time for creating plant profiles that help you observe and understand plants better.

In addition to working with lunar magic, the garden witch can choose to work with the pagan holidays to develop a magical garden spell! Each witchy holiday season brings a different set of plants.

I’m going to focus on the equinoxes and solstices for my intents and purposes, but you can take it one step further by gardening for the other witchy holidays, too. This includes Imbolc, Beltane, Lammas, and Samhain holidays.

For the spring equinox, also known as the Ostara holiday, you might enjoy the renewal of your garden. During this period, you can plant fresh herbs, add fresh garden soil, and create a rain spell to water your garden with weather witchcraft.

For the summer solstice, also known as the Litha holiday, you might enjoy partaking in the early harvests. You can make summer salads with the vegetables you’ve grown and berry smoothie bowls with the berries you’ve picked. During this period, you can create green kitchen witch recipes for a little bit of kitchen witchery!

For the autumn equinox, also known as the Mabon holiday, you might enjoy decorating your home and porch with fall seasonal gourds and roots. Here, you can craft wands and wreaths made from materials found by foraging in the garden. During this period, you might practice cottagecore witchcraft for the warm and cozy holiday season!

For the winter solstice, also known as the Yule holiday, you might enjoy the dormant nature of the season. This is a time to plan, reflect, and prepare for springtime and the return of light. During this period, you might practice garden planning and putting together garden spells for the warmer months ahead.

In addition to gardening by the moon and seasonal shifts, you might enjoy gardening by the weather! This means manifesting the weather you’d like to see in your garden. If your garden is too dry, you might try a rain spell. If there’s a hurricane coming, you might put up protections for your garden space and property.

Garden magic is special! It’s the type of magic that renews and charges itself over and over again through the transformative energies of the soil, water, and root systems beneath the plants. The animal and insect life that live there are just as magical as the garden they dwell in!

Life is a garden. Can you dig it? Use the garden oasis you’ve created to change your life. It’s the place you go when you want to feel the soil in the palm of your hand, the sunshine on your shoulders, and the magic in the confines of your heart space.

Sometimes, when you’re in the garden, it feels like home. That’s because a garden, whether it be a windowsill or a flowerbed, is an extension of your humble abode. When you carry in vegetables or bouquets from the garden, you are bringing nature into your home.

Learning about garden witchcraft will make you look at gardening magically! You’ll see and explore things in the garden that can enhance and hone your craft. You’ll gain a new perspective on the things that live and grow in the garden.

In this article, you’ll find everything you need to practice garden magic in a way that feels personalized to the plant witch at heart. Everything from garden spells to working with plant spirits is available here. Enjoy! xo

Gnome Magic in the Garden

Garden gnomes are a huge part of garden witchcraft. Ask any plant witch, and they will tell you about the gnomes that live and work in their gardens. Gnomes are great helpers!

Working with the gnome spirits can prove to be quite beneficial to your practice, especially if you have a fondness for working with plant spirits. They love people who grow, forage, and plant things.

Gnomes are of the earth element. They protect treasures, forests, crystals, and gardens with ease. The great thing about gnome spirits is that they love working with humans and can be quite friendly and helpful!

I’ve seen gnomes before. I saw a gnome in the hollow of a fairy tree in Sedona, Arizona, when I lived there. I left it a note with an aqua aura crystal as an offering for helping me.

If gardening is your thing, you are most likely to attract a helpful gnome-like creature into your life. Inviting gnomes and other kind, benevolent spirits into your garden will make your garden teem with life!

How to Attract Gnomes Into the Garden

  • Add gnome statuary and decorations

  • Leave wild areas of your yard for the gnomes to frolic in

  • Add gemstones wherever you can

  • Fill bird feeders and keep freshwater in bird baths

  • Add mushroom statuary (They love mushrooms!)

  • Plant trees wherever you can

  • Create tiny homes in which your gnome spirits can live in

  • Leave shiny things like mirrors and gazing balls

  • Use natural materials, but always add fairy lights

A Gnome Tea Party Spell to Invite Gnomes Into the Garden

To invite gnomes into the garden, you’ll want to make sure they have a cozy, whimsical environment that makes them feel welcome. If you have the means or the artistry, you can even put up signs for the gnomes to let them know they are welcome. They also adore colorful flags, such as prayer cloths.

Next, leave them an offering and place it somewhere in your garden sanctuary. Make sure it’s an area that feels gnome-like. Think of someplace in the garden that feels as if it were made just for them.

For the offering, I recommend anything shiny, sweet, and whimsical! They love that sort of thing. I like to leave gemstones and something sweet, such as a baked good.

Have a garden gnome tea party with them and leave them an invite with the offering. Be sure to set a date and time. Make sure you show up when you say you are going to, to show that you are courteous, punctual, and respectful!

For the tea party, you can either sit on a picnic blanket or on outdoor table and chairs. Be sure to have two tea cups. One for yourself and one for the gnome spirits.

Pour herbal tea into their cup and yours, then start a conversation with them, just as you would with an old friend. Tell them about your garden plans and discuss any plants you might be having trouble growing. Wear your heart on your sleeve!

By the end of the conversation, make sure you have verbally welcomed them into your garden! Leave the tea for them and tell them you look forward to more tea parties with them.

Last but not least, look for the signs of their presence. They have a sparkling energy about them when they are around. When they’ve been in the garden, you will undoubtedly know it.

Signs There’s a Gnome in Your Garden

  • Mushrooms suddenly popping up from out of nowhere

  • You can feel their sparkling presence

  • A sudden garden gnome showing up in your garden

  • Verdant plant, flower, and root growth

  • Things are being moved from their normal spot

  • Rich, organic soil that seems healthier

  • You are guided to secret, hidden garden spots

  • An abundance of large, colorful vegetables

  • Wildlife makes an appearance in the garden

Fairy Magic in the Garden

Fairies are highly attracted to serene gardens and lush forest landscapes. Working with them makes the garden lush, colorful, and teeming with life!

Garden fairies are attracted to plants, flowers, mushrooms, and tree spirits alike. They love a natural environment, but adore a cultivated backyard garden oasis, too. What matters most is making it cozy and welcoming.

Just like with the gnomes, which are a type of fairy-like creature, the fairies love shiny, sparkling things. It can be as simple as sunlight slanting across the garden to a mirror ball they can gaze into.

It’s important to remember that the fae are trickster spirits. They sometimes steal items they like from your garden and return them later. I’ve always believed they “borrow” the energy of the item taken.

This is why it’s so important to leave regular offerings in the garden and to give them plenty of space to ramble. Remember that you are sharing your garden with the fairies. This is their place of refuge, as well as yours.

This means crafting tiny fairy homes from natural materials and maintaining a sacred space where you can place their offerings. It’s also vitally important that you grow vibrant, colorful flowers of all kinds in your garden landscape. Try to choose flowers that they will be attracted to!

Flowers to Attract Fairies to the Garden

  • Bluebells are often used as bells that ring at twilight to summon fairies

  • Foxgloves serve as homes for the fairy folk

  • Thyme gives humans the gift of “sight” to see fairies

  • Hawthorne thorns are said to be the gateway to the fairy realm

  • Danedelions are said to make wishes come true from the fairies

  • Nigella pods can be used as fairy lanterns in the garden

  • Lavender attracts fairies to the garden and can be used for enchantment

  • Fairies often live in rose bushes

  • Ferns are perfect for fairy “shapeshifting” lore

  • Night-blooming cereus attracts fairies at the twilight hour

  • Moss makes the perfect gift gathered for fairy babies

It’s important to create a fairy garden that you know the fae will love! Again, anything floral and fragrant is a must, but adding plenty of greenery can also make it warm and inviting.

The Fairy Garden Spell to Attract Fae

For this spell, you’ll want to choose each item that you add to your garden with intention! I’ve mentioned some of the flowers and plants they enjoy, but you can also use your intuition to add a few of your own. Using local, native plants is an instant fairy attraction!

The key to this spell is attraction. You’ll be attracting the fairies rather than summoning them. When the fae choose you, there might be times when you need a favor from them.

Attracting them will take the guesswork out of petitioning them. Once you’ve attracted them, you need only continue to maintain the fairy garden space you created. Doing this creates boundaries, which the fairies are fond of, and shows them that you are respectful of their way of life.

I recommend taking a small patch of land and planting each plant, flower, and herb one by one with your intention in mind. The intention is to attract fairies, so you’ll want to keep that in your heart as you plant things.

This area of the garden is for the fairies only! This is their natural habitat and space in which they can wander freely. However, feel free to let them know they are welcome to anything in the garden they like.

Next, add fairy garden statuary to attract the fairy-like creatures to their little plot of land. Like attracts like and whatnot. Here, you can add a fairy house made of twigs, leaves, rocks, and other natural materials.

At the entrance to the tiny fairy home, make sure you write the word welcome in the dirt with your finger. Then, add gemstones or pebbles that lead to their door. Just outside their home, leave a cute offering you know they would like.

Fairies are a lot like gnomes. They enjoy toys, trinkets, and shiny things. They also like sweets, such as candies, baked goods, or sweet tea.

Once everything is complete, leave it be, and watch the fairies come. Be sure to check back during the tween times: dawn, noon, dusk, and midnight. Fairies really love the magic hour!

Signs There’s a Fairy in the Garden

  • Mushroom rings are a huge sign of fairy activity

  • Losing time in the garden or a sense of timelessness

  • A sudden shift or change in temperature or energy

  • Fairy sightings, especially from children

  • Pets like dogs and cats begin acting differently or focusing on a spot

  • The sound of whimsical background music playing seemingly out of nowhere

  • Flower rings are another sign that fairies live nearby

  • Sparkling glints of sunlight or sundew in the garden

  • Tiny laughter sounds or sounds of whimsy

  • Sudden cool breezes from out of nowhere

  • When butterflies and dragonflies are hovering, there’s a fairy in the garden

  • Objects are being moved around

  • Things keep disappearing from your garden, but appear out of nowhere later

Discovering Secret, Hidden Gardens

Discovering secret, hidden gardens is garden magic at its best! I’ve found that sometimes you’ll be led to a hidden garden that you never thought of before. If you work with gnomes or fairies, this is more likely to happen because they know all of the happening spots in your yard.

In my yard, outside the garden gate, I have a secret, hidden garden. It’s where the night-blooming cereus blooms every summer. It’s supposed to bloom only once a year in the night, but mine blooms multiple times throughout the summer, indicating fairies are nearby.

This area outside the garden gate is what I would consider to be a hotbed of activity. I often take many pictures in this spot, bury spells here, and spend time canoodling with the night-blooming cereus that dwells here in the summer months.

Using your intuition, find a hidden garden in your yard. It will usually be a small nook with a hotbed of activity. Maybe there are many butterflies that reside in the hotspot, or perhaps it has a bevy of wildlife constantly stopping by. Either way, you’ll get a feeling about the secret garden that you discover.

What should you do once you discover a secret, hidden garden? I recommend spending time there. You can snap photographs, plant things, and bury spells there. If there’s a special plant that lives there, such as a rose bush or night-blooming cereus, it’s a nice place to bond with the plant.

Additionally, if you sense the presence of gnomes or fairies there, you might like to leave them an offering and assemble a tiny home for them fashioned from natural materials. You’ll want to make them feel at home as much as possible here.

Depending on the hot spot, you can also add a small table and chairs, a hammock, or anything else that might make it a comfortable place to read and relax. You can also add a few garden decorations here if you like.

I’ll be honest, I keep my secret garden bare, other than the spell jars that I’ve buried there. Sometimes, when it rains, they resurface, and I’ll rebury them back into the ground. Other times, if it’s been enough time, I’ll throw them away.

It’s not a place I go to relax and hang out, but a sacred space in which I use to connect with the night-blooming cereus in the summer, and snap lifestyle photographs of miniature things. It’s also here that I perform road-opening spells with my blooming green tea, and sometimes mugwort. I find the garden gate to be a tween place.

With a hidden garden, I always say to do what feels right to you! It can be used as a reading nook, a place to snap pictures, play music, and connect with plant life.

Garden Witchcraft Spells for Home Protection and Blessings

Creating garden witchcraft spells and rituals is essential for the garden witch! There are many ways to create spells that can be buried in the garden. Even something as simple as a seed on the night of the new moon can be crafted into a spell with intention.

What I love about garden magic is that gardens have boundaries, borders, and walls. They often have garden gates to walk through and pathways. This makes a great place to install perimeter protection around the property.

Additionally, gardens are a great way to bring new beginnings and blessings into your home! There’s always something welcoming about a garden.

Wild gardens, often found on unkempt properties, can serve as habitats for familiars and spirits. The boundary between the cultivated garden and the wild garden can serve as a border to keep intruders out. This is a place where you can call on the wild spirits for protection.

For garden gates, you can perform road-opening spells. I like to use blooming flower green tea to pour on both sides of the garden gate, through which one can walk. Green tea is fast-acting and one of the most powerful herbs I’ve ever worked with!

For pathways, you can perform “finding” spells. There are times when we feel lost and need to find a new direction in life. For finding spells, I sprinkle the pathway with rosemary or mugwort to open things up.

For garden borders, I create a boundary with a bladed plant, such as aloe vera, or with thorny plants like cacti. When planting them or positioning their pots, I put my intention for protection into them.

For blessings in and around the home, I plant rosemary for sweet memories, basil to attract good things, and lavender for calm and peace. I will often sprinkle them around the perimeter of the property and at thresholds, such as doorways and windowsills.

For home defense and protection spells, I ask for all kinds of protection, and make sure it goes all around the perimeter of the property and home. This protects my home from manmade and natural disasters, intruders, and dangerous wildlife. I live in Florida, where it’s a must!

I also recommend enchanting garden decor. You can learn how to enchant nature-inspired accessories by transforming the item into a charm, an amulet, or a talisman.

Charms are used as amulets and talismans. You can even use it for both. Amulets are for protection, while talismans can be used to attract blessings, luck, and good fortune.

Amulets are used for protection purposes. Enchant garden decor that reminds you of something that might offer protection, such as a hedgehog statue. Hedgehogs represent boundaries.

Talismans are used to attract good things into your life. In this case, you might enchant a windchime or fairy lights. Fairy lights represent finding your way in the dark, while wind chimes represent positive energy in the garden.

Ideas for Garden Spells

  • Enchant a gnome statue to protect the garden (amulet). This will also attract gnomes to your garden.

  • Make a biodegradable garden charm bag from natural materials found in the garden. I like to use a large leaf and tie a string around it with herbs and crystals inside. It can be hung on trees or a garden trellis or buried in the garden. I often use tea bags made from natural materials that will break down in the soil and return to the earth.

  • Create a spell jar and bury it in the garden. You can create a map, so you know exactly where to find it later. Some people are against using spell jars outside, but I always see the future in them. Someday, far into the future, someone might do an archaeological dig and find my spell jar and study it.

  • Plant a seed for the new moon with your intention for the 28-day lunar cycle. Each individual seed should represent an intention. Be sure to water the seed, care for the seedling, and make sure it gets plenty of sunshine.

  • Make a hole in your garden soil and place herbs and gemstones with your intention. Cover the hole back up, and trust that your spell is complete.

  • Create a potted plant spell and place it near the garden or within its boundaries.

  • Design a terrarium spell using items from your garden. Then, bring it into your home. It’s like bringing nature into your home!

  • Create a DIY botanical energy shield for your garden. You can also make it so the garden comes with you wherever you go!

  • Draw sigils in the garden soil.

  • Create a flat lay spell using plants, flowers, rocks, twigs, and gemstones. Then, snap a picture of it, so you can look at it to manifest what you desire.

  • Enchant garden decor to attract luck and as a ward for protection.

  • Create plant wards around the garden.

  • Make a nature in an envelope spell with natural materials from your garden! This way, you can take it with you wherever you go or place it under your pillow each night.

  • Work with gnomes and fairies to bring your garden spells to life!

Well, there you have it, garden magic at its best! Working in the garden is one of the most carefree things you can do in the world. It’s important to approach garden spells with fun and whimsy, as it will attract benevolent spirits into your garden sanctuary.
