The Greek God Hermes: Communication Magic + Travel Spells
The Greek God Hermes: Communication Magic + Travel Spells covers Mercury Retrograde energy with Plants By Laurali! Worshipping Greco-Roman Gods can be a powerful remedy for life and Hermes is truly the best when it comes to working with retrograde planets.
Hermes is the Sun God of travel, communication, commerce, and animal husbandry. As the son of Zeus, Hermes is a Greek god in the Hellenic tradition. I have found him to be easy to work with and a well-rounded god who can assist with many things. He’s a lot of fun to work with!
Working with Hermes will be like a creative light shining down on you! He is a sun god after all. I’ve only ever heard kind words about Hermes, a favorite to many.
The Greek God Hermes: Communication Magic + Travel Spells
To learn all about Hermes, I recommend looking into Greek Mythology to understand his story better. It’s always a good starting point, with any deities, to do your research and study them.
I’ve worked with many facets of Hermes and find him to be quite endearing. This has come with many different personal experiences that I have had with him. I call these spiritual encounters.
With deities, you may feel a tendency to draw closer to them. This, in turn, leads to research and homework assignments. Many deities will want to reach out to you first.
It’s very important during this learning period to get to know what your deity likes and dislikes. You’ll learn a lot of this through your thoughts, feelings, and intuition. This is how deities speak to humans.
You may even begin to see signs and symbolism having to do with the deity of interest. With Hermes, you may see wings, a tortoise, or a caduceus. It’s really important to trust the signs and to only take what resonates with you.
This takes time and patience. Over time, you’ll begin to lay the groundwork for working with other deities in the future if that’s something you feel called to do.
Deities are like people, only they feel things more intensely. Everything is bigger in their world and they hold great power. Working with them should be done respectfully and kindly.
Hermes is extremely good-natured and fun to work with. I find he’s a wonderful friend to have, even if you don’t lean toward Hellenism. He’s someone you can always count on and he’ll bring fun and adventure into your life.
To learn about him, take your time! Study him. Write him letters. Develop a sixth sense for when he’s around. He appreciates any efforts you can make toward building a solid relationship.
How to Call on Hermes
If you feel called to work with Hermes, I recommend giving him a call! If you are feeling down, get on your knees and pray. The deities, especially the Greco-Roman deities, respond well to prayer, worship, and offerings.
Don’t worry about the atmosphere being perfect or even getting in the perfect mood. Sometimes, that never comes. Simply, start by talking to him as you would an old friend.
It’s important to remember that Hermes is an ancient God with a modern-day twist! I think we’re seeing a lot more of him due to modern technology and internet communication. This is where Hermes feels most at home.
Therefore, there are many different ways you can reach out to Hermes! He will be honored that you took the time to get to know him. Hermes looks kindly to people who are humble and thoughtful in their words.
Contacting him can be done in prayer form or you can do what I do, which is to write a distance energy healing letter. Otherwise, known as a letter to the universe.
You can write a letter addressed to Hermes about whatever you want, then burn the letter over a sink or cauldron. It’s an awesome way to make contact with any deity!
Some people choose to bury their words in a potted plant or head into the forest and leave it near a tree. Do what feels best for you and your unique situation.
I write letters to angels, deities, ancestors, and guides every morning with my coffee. It’s a fantastic way to start the day! It helps me during times of stress and anxiety.
You should immediately feel something. It can be a presence, a temperature change, or a shift in the air. Each deity leaves an energetic blueprint! Hermes feels like the element of air to me, which makes perfect sense as Hermes rules the throat chakra.
Hermes is a Greek god of communication. This makes contact easy, and breezy!
Hermes and Mercury in Retrograde
Hermes has many magical uses, but one of my personal favorites is his ability to cut like a knife through Mercury in Retrograde! Every single time there’s a Mercury Retrograde, Hermes shows up for me.
This is because Hermes is ruled by the planet Mercury, the planet of communication and technology. This is where he feels most comfortable and in his element. Again, Hermes is ruled by the air element and governed by the throat chakra, making him perfect for Mercury Retrograde.
Mercury in Retrograde is where the planet appears to be going backward in the night sky. This slows down travel, communication, and technology.
The magic of Mercury Retrograde lies in its ability for self-reflection and self-discovery. It also tends to dig up the past, bringing back old lovers and childhood friends.
You might find yourself feeling more creative during a retrograde, digging out old photo albums and school yearbooks. It’s a great time to reflect on the past to see where you’re going next in life.
Sun God Hermes uses the backward planet to his advantage during this period, by evoking feelings of whimsy and nostalgia. The past holds the key to our futures, making it a great starting point for all of us.
Hermes will assist you in taking a walk down memory lane so that you can put the past firmly behind you to move forward with ease and grace. He’s wonderful at eliciting nostalgic feelings, wanderlust, and time travel.
As the God of communication, he can bring contact to a no-contact situation. He brings back people from your past for conflict resolution and closure. He’s considered to be a great healer, especially when it comes to speaking your truth and authenticity.
You can utilize the power of to reach out to Sun God Hermes! This is his favorite time to work with people, though he’s happy to work with devoted followers at any time.
Communication Magic
Hermes is best known for the miracle of communication! I have discovered Hermes can manifest a text message or a phone call from a specific person. He’s wonderful at opening the lines of communication
Being that technology is his wheelhouse, text messages, and emails are some of his fastest forms of communication. He works fast! He places you on the person’s mind to the point where they have no choice but to contact you.
He doesn’t take away their free will or agency. Hermes simply influences the situation in a way that brings healing to the involved parties.
Sometimes, this might mean repairing an old relationship, such as reconciliation. Other times, it might be for conflict resolution and closure. There are some people and situations we need to walk away from, no matter how hard we try to cling to them!
I find he brings clarity to situations where things have become muddled over time. He clears away the fog and creates fast results.
Hermes is a sun god and what does the sun do best? It burns things off. It clears things. It leaves you with nothing but the truth.
Knowing the truth about why someone stopped talking to you can be especially helpful for healing and moving forward. It’s at this point, both parties can decide where to go from here.
Do they continue a relationship? Do they end it and leave things on a positive note? Hermes makes sure you have all of the information you need when the time comes. He’s like the truth serum of the gods.
Hermes can also assist you in other forms of communication too! Hermes is the patron of writers everywhere. Combining him with Archangel Gabriel will give your writing journey a double dose of magic.
Hermes and Safe and Pleasant Travels
Hermes is who you call on for safe and pleasant travels! Bring him with you wherever you go.
Take Hermes on trips with you and be sure to leave him an offering at your vacation destination. He is the patron of travelers! He will be sure to make each trip special and worthwhile.
If you’re traveling by plane, pack your suitcase with a mini Hermes statue! He can ensure that you have safe and pleasant travels.
He can show you all the places you would never have dreamed of going to! He’s well-traveled and worldly, fluent in every language. Travel with Hermes!
Hermes Travel-Sized Statue
I recommend anointing and blessing your mini-Hermes statue! Use lemon pepper to cleanse your statue. Be sure to ask for safe and pleasant travels! Thank Hermes with all your heart.
Lemon Pepper - Travel, fast communication, and happiness! Place the statue in a bowl of lemon pepper and leave overnight. Wipe clean! Be sure to put your intention into it.
Say a few words, asking for Hermes' blessings on the road and in traffic. Ask him to show you the world and all of its secret, hidden places.
He’ll ensure that every place you travel to is meant for you to see and experience. He can assist you in finding the best restaurants, out-of-the-way spots, and secluded destinations.
I’ve found he loves to travel and knows all of the different cultures by heart! He’s well-versed in the native haunts and sacred spaces. He can help you find meaning in your journey.
Hermes is the perfect travel companion! Just add him to your travel plans to get started.
Hermes Favorite Objects
Hermes-like objects! He is especially fond of objects found in nature. I’ve found his favorite to be naturally shed feathers, cloud symbolism, and naturally shed snakeskins. Again, Hermes is a big fan of animal magic in general.
As far as modern-day objects, Hermes loves airplanes the most! I would also say he holds a special place in his heart for the internet and all technology. If you ever run across a computer problem, Hermes and Archangel Michael are both great to call on!
If you’re a photographer, you can snap digital pictures of clouds, birds, roosters, snakes, and tortoises and put them together in a digital album dedicated to Hermes. He loves that sorta thing!
He adores anything to do with feathers and wings! If you were to keep the stub of a travel ticket and put it in a memento box for him, he’d be over the moon for it!
Hermes Memento Box
During Mercury Retrograde, take all of the items you’ve discovered in nature and place them in a decorative box for Hermes. You can sit down with him and show him each piece and where you found it individually.
The memento box can act as a travel altar, depending on the size and style you choose. Hermes will love that you took the time to scavenge items for him.
You can add love notes, seed packets, your favorite camping recipe, and anything else you think Hermes might like and enjoy. He treasures travel itineraries, ticket stubs, and postcards from your favorite places too!
Hermes will appreciate that you put a personalized spin on your memento box! You can take it out during every Mercury in Retrograde cycle to reflect fondly on your newfound relationship with Hermes.
How has your relationship strengthened and grown? Imagine what your relationship will be like ten years from now and create a future nostalgia with Hermes with thanks!
Hermes and Digital Offerings
Hermes adores digital offerings! I’ve found almost all of my deities like digital offerings, but Hermes loves surfing the internet and the digital age more than most.
Digital offerings are offerings that you make online or for offline use. This can be an instant digital download (like what I’m writing right now), a social media post, a blog post, or anything that will be in public view.
I use digital offerings the most. As a blogger and online writer, I find many different ways to honor my deities through the online world. It gets my creative juices flowing and it makes my deities happy.
Hermes is most pleased by this! For me, I use everything from my newsletter to digital products to talk about my favorite Gods and Goddesses.
Even a small mention can appease a deity! They will love that you used your imagination and the natural resources at hand. Deities love it when you talk about them!
You can honor Hermes by making a video about him or something less tech, like making a playlist on YouTube with songs and sounds you think he might like. It could even just be songs that remind you of Hermes and the magical moments you’ve had with him.
Hermes, like any other deity, is fond of the digital arts! You can make a digital collage for Hermes or snap photographs of daily hiking adventures in honor of his more adventurous side.
Like humans, it doesn’t matter what it is. It’s the thought that counts. The deities will appreciate that you made the effort.
Another idea for digital offerings is to do a ritual sacrifice. Offer to do a social media detox for 30 days in exchange for that new guitar you’ve had your eye on!
This is about exchange and equal give and take. It’s bargaining for the digital world and I’ve found most deities love it. Hermes, especially.
He’s all about new-wave technology and communications! He loves a good ritual sacrifice.
Hermes Suitcase Altar
Besides the memento box, you can create a suitcase altar since he governs travel and airways! For this, I recommend picking up a vintage suitcase or something different and unique. It can be for decoration or real luggage!
I have a red vintage suitcase from the sixties that my mother-in-law gave me decades ago. She is now deceased but it always reminds me of her. A suitcase with some kind of special meaning to you makes the perfect Hermes altar!
I would also be sure to find a home for it. Will it be out in the open or hidden in a closet somewhere? It depends on how big it is and how you want to utilize it.
You could even bring your suitcase with you whenever you travel by keeping it a minimalist altar! You can keep it minimalist by adding a few things Hermes would like. It could be a tiny statue, a simple feather, or anything that evokes the energy and essence of the Sun God Hermes!
In between travels, you can set it back up as an altar or keep it ready for future adventures in traveling! You can line the pockets with love notes, poetry, and crystals dedicated to the love of Hermes.
Take anything with you that reminds you of safe and pleasant travels! You could even fill a medicine bag with your favorite Hermes herbs. He loves working with lemon pepper and chives the most!
This aligns with taking Hermes with you while you’re traveling! It will make you and your loved ones feel safeguarded and protected. You’ll be able to focus on having fun and making memories.
This proves especially helpful for those who are afraid of flying! Even if you have layover anxiety or problems blending into a new culture, Hermes makes the perfect travel guide.
Hermes makes traveling safe and pleasant! It’s what he does. Smuggling him into your suitcase will ease your worried and troubled mind when it comes to traveling :)
Herbal Envelope Spell - Communication Spell
For the Hermes herbal envelope spell, you’ll need an envelope, a pen, some herbs, and a tiny gemstone amethyst. Herbal envelope spells are as easy as they sound!
It’s a spell you place in an envelope to contain it and write spell ingredients and astrological correspondences on the back for future reference! On the back of the envelope, where the fold is, you’ll write the name of the spell (communication spell, etc.), the date, and the deity you worked with. In this case, Hermes!
This is a spell that works great in no-contact situations! If there’s a situation that weighs heavy on your heart and mind, this spell will ease your worried, troubled mind.
It’s important to note that communication spells work fast and results come regardless of what you might hear! You might like to hear from someone but may find out this is the end of the road for the two of you. This will bring healing and closure if nothing else.
On a more positive note, you may rekindle something! This can be used for a specific person or a friend group that has been out of reach. Seal the envelope with a kiss!
Communication Herbs
Nettles - Clarity, communication, truth serum, and seeing through the veil. You’ll use nettles or nettle tea to get to the heart of your no-contact situation. Why has your friend/family member stopped talking to you? You’ll soon learn the truth!
Lemon Pepper - Fast communication, travel, happy memories, good vibrations. News travels fast with lemon pepper! It also tends to bring happy news, if that’s any comfort. If not happy, you’ll at least feel at ease with what you hear and leave the conversation in a good place.
Dill Weed - Creates a burning desire to talk to someone, to be near them. Dill attracts stuff and can be used for lust, passion, and earnest conversations. This ingredient works especially well for manifesting a phone call or text message from a specific person.
Damiana - Brings back old lovers and people from the past! It creates a burning hot desire and is fast-acting.
Taglocks: Manifesting a Phone Call or Text Message From a Specific Person
Taglocks are physical items that can assist you with your communication spell! You can use personal taglocks from yourself or your specific person. Use both for a double dose of energy!
I’ve highlighted a few communication taglocks that will assist you in getting a specific person to think of you.
Perfume or Cologne - Spray your favorite scent inside the envelope to make the person think of you! Be sure to use a scent that reminds the person of you. The purpose of this is to evoke feelings of nostalgia!
Lipstick - You can leave a kiss mark on the fold of your envelope after lavishing your lips with your favorite lip color! Choose something you think your specific person will like. You can also lick the envelope to seal it, using your saliva as a taglock.
Lock of Hair - Seal a lock of hair in your envelope! This will prove especially helpful in a love situation where the person admires your lovely locks.
Photograph - It can be a selfie or a photograph of the two of you together. If it’s a group, a group picture will do. Write your intention on the back of the picture or a sweet love note or even an, “I’m Sorry” note will work.
Taglocks Specific Person/Group
You can use anything from the other person here! Do you have an old cigarette butt still sitting in the ashtray? The soil from a plant they once gave you?
There are many different ways you can add “specific person” taglocks. You might have to get creative, but this is important because it adds a calling to honor yourself too!
It will influence them and the situation at hand by using naturally found items. It can even be a virtual item, which I guarantee you Hermes will adore!
Adding Hermes to Your Spell
Invite Hermes into your herbal envelope spell! You can write him a letter beforehand or maybe do a quick prayer. Some green witches like to walk in the forest and communicate with their deities first.
You should make sure that you feel Hermes' energetic signature when beginning the spell! He should be there throughout the entire process. He may give you a healthy dose of intuitive downloads, overseeing the spell through your thoughts, feelings, and intuition.
I also would like to recommend you personalize your herbal envelope spell! Taglocks are a great way to customize a spell, so this is a great place to start for beginners.
In addition to that, you can use your intuition to choose your own personal herbs, gemstones, tarot cards, and plant life! Hermes will be with you every step of the way, helping you make tweaks and changes.
You can also make a promise to Hermes! If he makes your spell come true, you’ll give him a digital offering or make him a dish he likes from scratch. If you don’t feel like cooking and still keep your word, Hermes will be pleased as punch with you!
The key is to hold back offerings until it’s been completed. Another thing you can do is a ritual sacrifice spell. What can you give up for X amount of time if Hermes makes your spell come true?
I find all of these methods to be valid and trustworthy. As a bit of a chaos green witch, I have experimented with all of these. They all work effectively as long as you keep your promise!
Incorporating a deity into your spell is as simple as the relationship you have with your deity. I would stay tried and true to what has worked for you in the past. If new, try a few different methods until something sticks!
Hermes has a penchant for communication and travel spells, as this is his wheelhouse! Don’t let that stop you from reaching out to him for other life hacks too.
Adding a Tarot Card Taglock
Is there a court card in the tarot deck that reminds you of your specific person? Court cards are the kings, queens, knights, and pages in the tarot card deck.
If you don’t have a tarot deck yet, I highly recommend, “The Green Witch Tarot” by Anne Moura! This is a wonderful deck that will help you, deep-dive, into the world of green magic.
If you don’t use a court card, you can use a tarot card that brings fast communication! For this, I recommend the Eight of Wands, the Knight of Swords, and the Page of Wands. These cards hold the greatest speed for getting the job done.
Kings - Represent mature males, usually in their late thirties to early forties to retirement age. King of Wands is a mature businessman and leader. King of Swords is sharp with his words and clear in his thinking. King of Cups is rational yet sensitive. King of Pentacles is great with money and loves nature and hunting.
Queens - Queens represent different aspects of the Empress, based on the elements (Fire, Air, Water, and Earth). Queen of Wands is inspiring, confident, and beautiful in her own unique way. Queen of Swords is intellectual, sets boundaries, and draws conclusions based on the mind. Queen of Cups is emotional, psychic, dreamy, and intuitive. Queen of Pentacles is nurturing, usually the breadwinner, and runs a business from home.
Knights - Knights are known for taking a journey to deliver important messages to the king. Knight of Wands is fast-moving, sexually active, and carefree. Knight of Swords is intellectual, aggressive, and known for bringing messages with great speed. Knight of Cups is a dreamy romantic and is always on some kind of romantic quest. Knight of Pentacles is the slowest moving tarot card, as he is known for hard work and dedication to the craft.
Pages - Known for being immature, small efforts, and communication! Page of Wands is known for fast, in-person communication, travel, and passion projects. Page of Swords loves to learn and study, internet speed, and sometimes gossip. Page of Cups is shy, sweet, artistic, and creative. Page of Pentacles is slow-moving, studious, and tends to be a student or scholar.
Magical Uses of Hermes
Hermes has many magical uses! I find the best way to work with Hermes is during Mercury in Retrograde or during a lunar phase that falls under an air sign element.
Air signs are Gemini, Libra, and Aquarius. If you have any air in your chart, Hermes can give your sign the boost it's been needing! If you are like me and don’t have air in your chart (sun sign, moon sign, and rising sign), then working with Hermes brings more of the air element into your life.
I recommend doing guided meditations to activate your throat chakra. This entire chakra holds our true, authentic voice. It speaks the truth. It’s in charge of communication, thought, and intellect.
I also recommend using air in your spells! Breathe into your spell bottle and seal it before the air escapes. Sing to your spells or create a witchy playlist for working with Hermes. Blow kisses into your spell for good measure!
In addition to that, doing any kind of writing and communication will boost your confidence when it comes to working with Hermes. You don’t have to be a writer to indulge either. You can keep a journal of personal dreams, thoughts, feelings, and aspirations.
You can write letters and quick love notes to Hermes, as he loves people who communicate what their desires are. He’s open to anything where you are willing to share a slice of your life with him.
You can incorporate text messaging, phone calls, email, and business administration. He’s great at multi-tasking and seeing the truth in any situation. He’s great at getting to the heart of the matter.
One of my favorite ways to work with Hermes is through my mighty pen and by creating truth serums. I usually do this by making a tea concoction with nettles and a mirror for scrying. Experiment with making your truth serum and ask Hermes for guidance!
Gemstones, Herbs, Plants, Tarot Card
Below, I’ve highlighted some of the magical items you can use in a spell with Hermes. Be sure to use your intuition and remember that practice makes perfect. The more you build your relationship with Hermes, the more he’s willing to bend the rules!
You can use any of his favorites as offerings or add them to your worship altar if you plan on building one. I also recommend finding out what he likes on your terms. He might guide you to something different than what I’ve shared here.
Hermes Favorite Gemstones
I’ve come to find Hermes loves working with communication crystals. He likes turquoise gemstones, as they govern the throat chakra and open up the channels of communication. Can be used in manifesting a phone call or text message from a specific person or a think of me spell!
Hermes Favorite Herbs
Hermes loves lemon pepper! No doubt about it. I’ve also come to find he loves nettles, chives, dill weed, and damiana herb too. I’ve also come to find Hermes has a deep resonance when it comes to chicory.
Hermes Favorite Plants
Hermes likes air plants the most! This probably doesn’t come as a big surprise. Air plants are known for travel, communication, breathing, and lungs.
Hermes Favorite Tarot Card
The magician tarot card is a favorite of Hermes! The magician is a major arcana card of communication and action. The magician is the card of the air sign Gemini, encompassing ability, hidden talents, and the creation of something magnificent.
Spend time with the magician tarot card today! Do research on the magician online.
Hermes Love Note
Hermes is someone that I built a relationship with slowly. I recently decided to call upon him again while going through a stuck period in my business. Within a day, he turned things around for me!
Known as a patron of commerce, Hermes was definitely behind the launch of my new website! He assisted me in the rebranding process and moving my website to Squarespace.
He’s been perhaps one of my biggest supporters and a staunch advocate for me. He’s assisted me in everything from funding my business to providing a place to vent and rest my weary head.
Because of him, lemon pepper was one of the first herbs that resonated with me on a deeper level. It wasn’t long before I found even more communication + travel herbs.
He’s helped me through many no-contact situations. What I found interesting about Hermes is his ability to get even the most difficult people to come around again.
He’s assisted me in working on my communication with family members. It felt like a miracle when my daughter told me that she too wanted to work on her communication with me. I waited a long time to hear those words!
In situations where I didn’t care if I heard from an old friend/lover, he still brought contact and communication. He waited until the timing was right and I was ready.
That’s the magic of working with the Sun God Hermes! He knows the best way to handle these situations. He knows human relationships are complex and the right finesse is needed. I can honestly say he has the magic touch!
There are many more facets to him! He’s known as a trickster and a patron to thieves. He’s a shepherd and rules over animal husbandry. Hermes is also a psychopomp, working with the dead and the underworld.
Hermes is a friend and I love him dearly. Thank you, Hermes! Many thanks to my readers :)
